Empowering The Bicycle Traveler

Small Bike Tour

Chris Johnson already coined the word “micro-tour”.  “Small tour” might describe our Saturday ride. Eleven miles to a little restaurant in a neighboring town, a cup of coffee, some fish tacos and some time to sit in the sun and read. Doesn’t even really qualify as “cycling”. It’s just something we did and we happened to do it with bicycles.

Warm sun, no hurry!

Enjoying the good things about bike touring, like relaxing in a nice spot and not being in a big hurry. And not really having any other urgent commitments at the moment. We took our books and  we took jackets and long pants, because even though the sun felt great the wind had a bite to it. And the Zimbale canvas saddlebags came in handy!

The Not Even A Bike Ride

I think this describes be Friday. I rode my bike just because it was so nice out. First I rode to get a massage on NE Alberta, about 3 or 4 miles through a quiet neighborhood. After I had recovered from my post massage bliss, which meant riding very slow down wide neighborhood streets, I hopped in the bike lane on Broadway and headed down to Bridgeport for dinner. Since Steve didn’t have a bike we took the max home and stopped for a beer at Lucky Lab on the way from the max stop to our house. So much better than driving when its nice out and much faster than walking.

Whatever you call it,…it sounds grand, and yet another way to enjoy the bicycle. Nicely done.

These rides sound great, but to me a “tour” is at least going out for one night on the bike. Not necessarily camping, and multi-modal is OK, but at least over night. A day ride is just that, or it could be a “jaunt”, a “toodle”, an “outing”, or some other newly coined term. Just having fun as any time spent on the bike is good.

Lately I have been thinking about small bike touring. Probably old and underpowered also. A bike that would turn an over night camping trip into an adventure. A bike that would make back roads mandatory due to its lack of power and speed.

Alex, I’m old and underpowered, but I make do!
